February 10 was the Chinese New Year. There are celebrations in Chinatown the 3 weekends before, Grandma says so they can make more money! Since this was the Friday before Chinese New Year I decided we should take a field trip to Chinatown. We went with the girls’ 91 year old Great-Grandma, and Tank’s daddy. Before we left I taught them, ni hao (hi), shay shay (thank you) and they kind of already knew, Kung Hee Fat Choy (Happy New Year). I gave them each a li see with a dollar so they could buy something. I thought pink envelopes would be fun since they are girls but grandma said, “red is good luck, never mind pink for girls or whatever.”
Hal’s mom was sick that day so she kept Hal home to contain the flu germs. It was crowded everywhere so here they are outside the candy shop. I got them some candied coconut. Tank and Uniqua loved it. We went into the market area where they saw some live fish and lots of animal parts.
I didn’t get as many pictures as I would have liked. We also didn’t get to see any lion dancing which I was hoping for. The girls used their dollars on drums and fans. They said “shay shay” to the sales lady and she said it back. That was fun. It was a lot of walking for them so we were all ready to go after a couple hours. We stopped and bought manapua for lunch. Char Hung Sut sells the BEST steamed manapuas! We ate in the car on the way home. Kung Hee Fat Choy!
