Feelings – Day 1

Just 3 chicks today and, Yay! we had Jordan to help. The girl’s were very excited to have their senior cousin to help them with their games and projects and to offer a snuggle. For sign in the chicks cut out faces that reflected how they were feeling at the moment to glue in their journals, Uniqua was surprised, Hal, happy and Pooh was a little sad, missing, Daddy at work.

Wanting to start positive, we began with “happy”, singing “Smiles” before the prayer, followed by “I am Like a Star” and “If You’re Happy and You Know It”. We read Dolly Parton’s book “I Am a Rainbow” We also watched a YouTube video of the Daniel Tiger song “When You Feel So Mad That You Want to Roar” and sang along.2015-04-20 12.28.35

and then played “How Do I Feel” with cards I got here. They liked taking their card to Jordan for coaching on faces.

By now the tide was really low and we couldn’t resist a quick venture in Grandma’s “front yard”. We saw a few fish and fire worms and they wanted to collect shells.

It was overcast and the water was cold so we didn’t last too long. We ate lunch early read a couple of  Angry books and finished up their books. We talked about kind ways deal with anger. A counselor friend gave me this article on helping preschoolers understand and deal with emotions and I found it very insightful.

Forgot to mention that the chicks also made cards and hugs for their mainland cousin who has been sick for many weeks. We talked about how we can do things to help others feel better and that’s what they wanted to do. Jordan helped them compose their messages.

Community Helpers- Day 3

We started with a memory game, I bought some cute clipart from here.  I found it on pinterest.  It was  a nice way to introduce different community helpers and talk about what they do as the chicks found matches.

I thought community helpers were first responder type jobs, fire fighters and police.  As I was searching for ideas, every thing I found included bakers!  As a former baker, I was very excited.  Unfortunately my oven was having issues and not working so we didn’t get to do any baking, baking.    Everything no-bake that I found and thought would be kid friendly, required setting and more time than we had.  I settled on rice krispie squares.  I love rice krispies, but they are not as exciting as bread or cookies.

There were some really cute ideas on this site, including songs. I liked the song that goes along to farmer in the dell.   I was looking for occupation clip art to put on sticks to go along with the song and that’s when I found the teacher website and decided it was worth $1.60  to save me prep time.  (There are a lot of free ones but I really liked this one.)IMG_4570

I cut out the pictures and taped them to fat popsicle sticks.  The girls wrote their names on each stick so that they wouldn’t mix them up.  Pooh complained that she got poked by the picture so I had to round the edges.IMG_4572 IMG_4573

Community Helpers-Day 2

I was supposed to have the chicks on Monday, but Hal was sick and needed to go to the doctor.  Turns out she had double ear infections.  Luckily Matt at the Kaneohe Animal hospital was very accommodating and rescheduled our visit for today.  I forgot my camera at home so these are iphone pictures.  I didnʻt get as many pictures as I wanted to.  I was a little worried about keeping the chicks close.  First thing, the ladies at the front desk took us to the waiting room and gave the chicks coloring pages to color and put up on the wall.IMG_2730After a few minutes, Matt (the hospital manager) came to show the chicks around.  First stop was the animal scale.  Hal wouldnʻt get on.  After her doctorʻs visit and flu shot on Monday, she wasnʻt feeling all that comfortable with the doctor thing.   Then Matt took us to the treatment rooms where a dog was under general anesthesia to get his teeth cleaned.  There was another dog in a kennel with an IV drip recovering from anesthesia.  I couldnʻt tell if the chicks were intrigued or a little weirded out.  They met the veterinary doctor, a vet tech, and a vet dental tech.IMG_2733 IMG_2734The ladies that worked at the reception desk were so excited to have us that they put little goody bags together for us. They were so sweet.  The chicks got a cup, frisbee, a Clifford book, and some magnets.  They were thrilled to get their little bags.  Donʻt ask me what Halʻs doing.IMG_2735From here we went to Longs to get a treat to send to Aunty Bethany in California.IMG_2738Then on to the post office to send our treats.  I showed them around a little.  We talked to one of the postal workers.  Theyʻre standing in front of the PO Boxes with their pictures for Aunty Bethany.  They were drawing in the car so itʻs not their best work. (Hal did start out with footwear).  The post office patrons were very entertained watching these dramatic chicks run around the post office.IMG_2739We addressed and filled the package.  I was too cheap to pay for the box, so hopefully it made it OK.   IMG_2740We paid for the postage at the self-serve kiosk and Pooh placed the stamp in the upper right corner. IMG_2745It was a team effort to get the package into the drop box. IMG_2744 IMG_2742Then to McDonaldʻs for lunch.  This is the place to go to find police officers.  Two different officers came in while we were there, so I asked one of them to come over to say hi.  They werenʻt too interested and he wasnʻt very entertaining so that didnʻt last long.  The french fries were getting cold!IMG_2749 IMG_2751

Theme: Community Helpers Day 1

We read a great book about people in our community.  It’s a little Corduroy book called, “Corduroy’s Busy Street.”  This book came in a set that I got years ago.  I don’t think you can even purchase it anymore.  But, it’s super cute because it covers quite a bit of what goes on in the community.

We started off at the library.  We knew Aunty Dani would be going to the library, so we just went to the library book sale under the library which is open for a few hours during the week.  We were lucky that it was open on our day!

The chicks each picked out a book.  I was super psyched about the ones I got.  Minus the girls books, my books were in “like new” condition.  You can’t see it, but “The Very Hungry Caterpillar” board book was only $0.75.  I already have some of these, but to have board books in good shape for a few cents is awesome.  Our total was $4.20!

Showing off their new (used) books.  I had to bite my tongue on their book choices.

IMG_8660

We walked a couple hundred feet up the hill to the police station.

IMG_8661

It’s really not exciting to see…nothing like the offices on Law & Order or even Miami Vice or Hunter (If you don’t know…sad for you).

IMG_8662

We spent more time looking at the inside of this police car.  I never knew there wasn’t a real seat in the back.  It’s hard plastic seats that sit really low and back.  Makes a germ-a-phobe like me excited.  Easy to clean!
IMG_8663

We drove past the fire station where Tank’s dad works.  Then we went up to the bakery.  After oooh-ing and ahhhh-ing, each of the girls got a donut.

We decided to get an eclair for grandma and swing by to drop it off on our way home.  I was really good and didn’t get myself anything.  Trying really hard to lose the baby fat!

IMG_8664

Apparently this guy got the memo that we were doing community helpers today!  He was in the parking lot when we got out.  If you can’t tell, Hal was less than thrilled.

IMG_8665

Then in the same parking lot, they took a picture at the bus stop.  If I had the camera ready two seconds earlier, they would have had a bus in the background.

IMG_8670

Next, we went to the drug store.  I needed shampoo and this was on sale for a dollar, so I just had each of them grab one.

preschool shopping

After that, we headed over to grandma’s to drop of the eclair.  She insisted that she didn’t want it.  I called her before we got there to let her know that we would be swinging by.  Of course, she had a treat ready for each of them.  I very rarely see grandma with that on her head.  She reminded me of the bird’s mom in, “Are You My Mother.”  I just picked up that board book at the library book sale!

IMG_8671

And in case  you’re wondering what happened to grandma’s eclair…so much for the weight loss goal today.

IMG_8676

Being a good member of our community, we were sure to get lunch from our local McDonalds.  We didn’t have time to come home and prep something, so this worked.  Besides, all they really wanted to do was get to the donut!
